Hotel Ashoka Hanumakonda, Warangal - LINGAM - the inspiration for the above mural comes from some of the common aspects of the three famous temples of warangal - 1) The thousand pillared temple 2) Ramappa temple and 3) The ruined Shiva temple of the fort.
The concept is all about the depiction of the transition of profane to sacred realms, which is a principle aspect of a typical HINDU temple - and this aspect of transition, is executed in these temples to perfection.
The stylish, sophisticated and splendid design order of the temple exteriors turns any observer silent and meditative. A slow transformation initiates into the observer as the external physical order inflicts internal order and absorbs him. The exterior leads to the interiors and ultimately to the sanctum. The gradual preparation of the self to encounter and absorb higher energy levels of the Garbha Griha and to ultimately understand/ realize the truth of existence/ life i.e, the concept of Lingam (culmination of the male and female energies).
The reigning deity of the place is Lord Shiva, as all the three temples are Shiva’s temples. All the temples display a highly evolved design order with refined detailing. Another interesting aspect of these temples is the sinking of the base into the ground,
and some of the stone slabs even rise up in an inclined fashion. This shows the process of ruin and also indicates a particular time phase, which is reflected in the proposal/ composition. |
